CHASSIS NO: VC57K162031
• Unrestored and well-maintained “survivor”

• Featuring correct fine detail items specific to the FI cars
• 1 of 1,530 factory-built, full-size Chevrolet FI cars for ‘57
• Retains original engine and Turboglide automatic transmission
• Offered from long-term and knowledgeable single ownership since 1999

283 cid V-8 engine, Rochester mechanical fuel-injection, Turboglide automatic transmission, independent front suspension with unequal-length A-arms and coil springs, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, power-assisted four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes; wheelbase: 115”

The present owner has owned this unrestored, factory-original “survivor” example of the rare Fuel-Injected 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe since December 1999. It remains in excellent, original, and mostly unmodified condition, featuring the matching numbers, 250-HP 283 V-8 ‘Fuelie’ engine and Turboglide automatic transmission. Assembled in Kansas City, Missouri in May 1957, it has been driven approximately 62,000 miles at the time of cataloguing. The engine has never been rebuilt, hence the original patina in the engine compartment, and the consignor reports that it runs great. Finished in black with a red and black interior, the paint is mostly factory-original, and the interior is still in excellent and beautiful original condition. This rust-free automobile is believed to have never been hit and the body remains very straight. Due to gravel chips in the rocker panel area, the second owner had the car repainted below the side trim. However, the majority of the paint is shiny and original, thanks to the car’s consistent garage storage. The presence of a few minor wear spots, mainly primer showing through the original paint, in several places is a result of frequent waxing. Also, there are some gravel chips on the front of the hood and minor scratches here and there, culminating in a nicely settled patina.

Underhood are found several factory assembly-line yellow chalk marks on the hood latch cover, which according to several Chevrolet experts, were likely an alert to the assembly workers that a fuel-injection system was to be installed in this car. The spiral rear shock absorbers seem to be original to the car. The engine suffix pad has the stamping “F418GF,” denoting “Flint, April 18, Turboglide, Fuel-Injection,” and the consignor advises that all fuel-injection components are original to the car and, to the best of his knowledge, the legendary Rochester 4520 fuel-injection unit has never been rebuilt and has always operated well, with minor tuning from time to time.

The first owner of this rare ‘Fuelie’ was a young man and, for whatever reason, his father is understood to have made him return it to the selling dealership. The second owner, who bought the car in late autumn 1957, said that he was informed that this car was a factory demonstrator to promote the sales of fuel-injection passenger cars and because of this, they made sure that it had the best components installed to keep it running flawlessly. After the factory reps were done with the car, it was sent to a dealership near Omaha, Nebraska, where it was sold. The second owner was asked if he had the original dealer paperwork for the car, but it was lost or misplaced. He did sign a notarized “Verification of Authenticity” for the present owner regarding his history with the car. He had also written a note to the previous owner detailing essentially the same information. These documents accompany the sale of this rare car, which retains the original peripheral FI components. Many years ago, the second owner replaced the original Turboglide automatic transmission with a three-speed manual overdrive transmission, but the overdrive cable is disconnected. However, the Turboglide was retained, and accompanied the car with each new owner. The consignor has just recently had the Turboglide rebuilt by a knowledgeable mechanic in Oregon with NOS parts.

According to enthusiasts of these very special Chevrolets, only several dozen are known remaining today, in a range of conditions from unrestored, “survivor” cars, to restored cars, and restoration projects. According to the consignor, this Fuel-Injected 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air has been studied as a reference by restorers. It should be stressed that this car is a factory-built Fuel-Injected “survivor,” and not one of the many replica cars in existence, and it stands up to close inspection by knowledgeable enthusiasts and collectors. Nearly impossible to find today, this unrestored, factory-built 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air “Fuelie” is a great find and extremely rare, accompanied with ownership paperwork at auction.
