Lanny Sims, along with his wife, Debra, was a passionate collector of fine Jaguar motorcars and, as with everything else in his life, he took to his restorations with meticulous research and the steady hand of a true craftsman. He acquired his first Jaguar in 2005 and immediately began to study the intricate workings of these fine cars until he understood them inside and out. So well-versed was his knowledge of the XK120 that he became a well-known authority as the person to ask in Jaguar circles. His time spent as a JCNA judge allowed him to become a recognized expert and he was always willing to help. His own Jaguars, including the three offered at this auction, won numerous awards for both their excellence and authenticity. Sims' obsession with detail served him well and his Jaguars were a source of pride. Sadly, Sims passed away in September of 2016 and his prized Jaguars are now looking for their next caring owners.
Here is a fine example of this most iconic car and the first offered from the Lanny Sims Estate. Elegance, class, sophistication, and performance all come together in this coupe that’s finished in classic black, a color that nicely accents its beautiful lines. The dramatic style of Jaguar’s masterpiece is accented by a set of wide whitewall tires and the rounded and sculpted body lines make this Fixed Head Coupe an aerodynamic work of art. The interior is finished in a lovely red and all upholstery, carpets, door panels, and interior trim are in excellent condition. Most impressive is the dashboard that is beautifully finished with lovely wood. The gauges take on a jewel-like appearance when set against such fine wood and the appearance alone sets off a level of comfort that is seldom seen in a car of this vintage. The engine compartment is a superbly detailed masterpiece with polished aluminum surfaces and correct colors throughout.
The quality of the restoration in this XK120 is widely recognized as proven by its numerous awards including a preservation award; Best Jaguar in its Class at the JCNA Nationals for two years in a row, a first place win at the Classic Auto Show & Cruise-In, and a win at the AACA National Spring Meet. It was also judged 99.98 points at the 2010 JCNA Concours d'Elegance.
It also has the fine distinction of having been owned for a time by racing legend and "First Lady of Drag Racing" Shirley Muldowney. In a letter from her accompanying the car, she states that she not only owned but actually took her driver’s test in it. Additionally, it had a special place in the Sims household as Lanny drove his wife Debra to their wedding reception in style in this beautiful Fixed Head Coupe.
The Jaguar XK120 made its mark on the world of fine motorcars. This example, with its high quality restoration and exceptional condition, makes it one of the most noted in existence. It now stands ready to make more memories as it's condition, provenance and style live on.
