Offered here is the second car from former JCNA Judge Lanny Sims Estate; a 1950 XK120 Open Two-Seater. This car was his first and the subject of an intense four-year restoration completed in 2008. So precise is the restoration of this car that it has scored 100 points at over 10 Jaguar Club of North America (JCNA) events including five years in a row at the JCNA Concours d'Elegance from 2009-2013 and then subsequently retired from competition. The smooth and elegant styling of the XK120 is nicely defined in this example, which features rear spats and is finished in Jaguar’s attractive Carmen Red. The smooth and flowing lines of the XK120 are clearly evident in the way that the front fenders run the full length of the car terminating at the rear for a look that is unbroken and elegant. The interior is elegantly finished in tan and all workmanship is of the highest quality. All gauges are clean and clear and all trim and upholstery feature fine stitching and perfectly matched pleats in a cockpit that is truly a driver’s environment. Excellent workmanship is also evident in the matching tan convertible top that fits well in all areas with no issues. The top bows are finished in chrome and add a sophisticated touch of elegance. Power for this XK120 comes from Jaguar’s tried and proven twin cam six fitted with double SU carburetors. The engine compartment in this car is beautifully detailed with polished aluminum, correct wiring, and all belts and hoses that are in proper order. The chassis and undercarriage is amazingly detailed with correct colors and clean surfaces everywhere. Indeed, a close inspection of the underside offers a good explanation of the 100 points for five years running at the JCNA Nationals. In addition to club judging, this XK120 also won Best in Class awards at the Ault Park Concours d'Elegance and many others.
Lanny Sims loved his Jaguars and his passion for their perfection is clearly demonstrated in the beauty and superior craftsmanship that he put into each one of his cars. Right down to the felt square that wraps the hood rod in the clamp, he simply didn’t settle for second best in any aspect of his cars and this 1950 XK120 proves it. The attention to detail and the quality of the build of this car makes it one of the best XK120s in existence. This fine Jaguar will live on as one of the best of its kind and will continue to be appreciated as an iconic sports car.
