The pickup truck of yesteryear was a tool of utilitarian design. No plush carpeting, no power windows, and certainly no cup holders. The changeover to the modern truck we know of today began when Chevrolet introduced the Cameo pickup in 1955. Bright colors, a stylish design, and even a fiberglass bed built at Chevrolet’s Corvette plant all came together to make a truck like no one had ever seen before. Indeed, the new Cameo sent shock waves through the pickup truck industry and slowly, but surely, the truck began to change.

The beautiful Cameo offered here is just a bit different, as it’s finished in an attractive Commercial Red with Bombay Ivory accents, which is the exact opposite of how it came from the factory. The paint presents well and is nicely accented by color-keyed rims with dog-dish Chevrolet hubcaps mounted on Uniroyal Tiger Paw radial tires. The fiberglass rear fenders and the exterior tailgate panels are in excellent condition and their distinctive design gives this truck a look all its own. The cab is nicely accented by a visor over the wraparound windshield and Chevrolet also used the wraparound design at the rear. Beautiful real wood lines the bed while the Cameo script is tastefully displayed across the inset panel on the rear quarter. Power for this Cameo comes from a 350 cubic-inch V-8 mated to a Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic transmission. The engine compartment is nicely detailed with polished chrome and all wiring and plumbing properly sorted. Driving is easy, thanks to power steering and power brakes, a feature that very few pickup trucks of the era had. The interior of this Cameo is clean and features a two-tone red and white bench seat with red carpeting and white headliner. Although the Cameo was crossing the line with car-like luxury, the steering wheel was still a simple two-spoke design while all gauges were mounted directly ahead of the driver. This Cameo has a Pioneer AM/FM stereo complete with CD player.

Chevrolet changed the game with the Cameo in 1955 and, for the first time, there was a truck that could be used for a night on the town. This Cameo represents a time when life was simple and a truck was little more than a work horse. For fine cruising on the boulevard, this Cameo is just waiting to hit the open road.
