The British have always been steadfast in their development of their cars. While American car builders will regularly change body styles and give a car a whole new look, the English are content with merely calling a refined version a series II car until further refinements are carried out it becomes a series III. Witness the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud that underwent three series designations with the last introducing the quad headlamp design. There’s also the E Type Jaguar that gained a V-12 engine with its series III designation. This concept is beautifully illustrated in the Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III. As the last incarnation of the “Big Healey,” the 3000 benefited from all of its predecessors’ refinements and more. A more powerful engine, better suspension, and a driver’s compartment that featured burled walnut and a center console offered the true Grand Touring experience in the 3000 Mark III.

Offered here is an gorgeous example of this great car in the way of a 1967 Austin-Healey Mark III Roadster. This 3000 was the subject of a comprehensive restoration in 2012 by noted Austin-Healey specialist Kurt Tanner, whose restorations have won awards all over the show circuit. This 3000 was a great basis for Tanner’s work as it was owned by a collector in Texas from 1979 and had the benefit of the dry Texas environment. The underside was both undamaged and rust free with its wheel wells carrying paint rather than undercoating. All paint and body work have been meticulously restored and it was refinished in seldom seen, classic black. This is also a car that is fully sorted mechanically and runs just as well as it looks. The engine compartment is fully detailed to a level that is astounding and presents just as it did when it left the factory in 1967. The engine itself is an engineering marvel with twin two-inch SU carburetors that enable its straight-six to produce 150 horsepower, making it the most powerful Austin-Healey at that time. In true sports car fashion, acceleration from 0–60 mph took a mere 9.8 seconds and top speed was recorded at 120 mph. The sound from its 2,912 cc straight six-cylinder engine rated at 150 horsepower is just what a sports car should be. Other improvements on the 3000 Mark III included a revised exhaust system, a vacuum brake booster as a standard factory accessory, and a revised rear suspension system that improved ride height. The interior of this car presents in fine British sports car fashion with comfortable bucket seating for two up front and a rear seat best suited for small passengers. Gorgeous red leather is found inside while a burled walnut dashboard is surrounded in black leather. Sitting behind the wheel of this classic roadster offers a commanding view of the road in a way that only true sports car can. As a Series III car, suspension is the ultimate and handling the back road is sheer pleasure. With its classic looks, powerful performance, and highly tuned suspension, the Austin-Healey 3000 Series III Roadster is an all-round great sports car that has earned its place among the all-time greatest.

The 3000 Mark III was introduced in 1963 and stayed in production through December of 1967 and in that time 17,712 were built, making it a very successful car. As the final version, the 3000 Mark III represents the highest refinement of the marque. Built for speed and styled with aerodynamic perfection, the 3000 Mark III is a milestone car that is still a delight to see on any concours show field. Complete with spare tire, tool kit, jack, and Heritage Certificate from Austin-Healey, this example, with its superb condition, is a car that can sit proudly amongst its peers. In the true spirit of Austin-Healey tradition, it can be fired up for an exciting run in the countryside on any given day and displayed at noteworthy British car meets everywhere.
