The Chevrolet Corvette is widely recognized as an American icon in sports car history. Born in 1953 as one of Harley Earl’s projects at General Motors, the Corvette has become a chapter of automotive history all by itself. In the present day, it has become a highly refined sports car that is capable of awe inspiring performance but, long before the day of the Z06 or the ZR1, the Corvette was a simplistic roadster that offered stellar performance in a great package. When GM offered a V-8 for the Corvette in 1955, performance jumped a notch and the Corvette became a fierce competitor on the track. Fuel-injection for 1957 moved performance to whole new level and the Corvette was now a force to be reckoned with. General Motors knew all too well that the Corvette was capable of race track performance and there was no shortage of options built especially for racing. Oversized fuel tanks and brakes that could stop a train were a couple, but the fuel-injection option took the game to a whole new level.

The 1962 Corvette featured here was built with several of the performance upgrades that makes it both powerful and rare. As the last year of the first- generation Corvette, it also represents the ultimate in refinement for the earliest models. Finished in Chevrolet’s beautiful Sateen Silver with a matching hardtop, this Corvette bears all the styling cues from the last year of the C-1, but what sets this one apart from the rest is that it is a pure performance car. Although a radio and heater were standard factory offerings, this one was ordered as a “delete” car as authorized by GM and saved precious pounds. Other performance indicators on this Corvette are options 686 and 687 that offered heavy-duty oversize brakes with metallic linings and special quick ratio steering. Of course, all this handling and braking is needed only when coupled with absolute power, and this Corvette doesn’t disappoint with factory fuel-injection. This enormous option added a whopping $484 dollars to the bottom line, but what the buyer got was a 327 cubic-inch V-8 that was rated by Chevrolet at 360 thundering ponies. Indeed, anything meeting up with a fuel-injected Corvette at the red light was in for a rude surprise with such power lurking under the hood. This Corvette was fully restored in 2015 to concours specifications and has been driven just 30 miles since. It was the subject of a frame-up restoration that left nothing overlooked in terms of authenticity. A close look from any angle reveals a highly detailed frame and engine compartment that carries a factory-like appearance. Its monster fuel-injected V-8 is perfectly detailed with correct factory hoses, belts, and clamps. The interior is finished in black and all gauges, upholstery, dashboard, door handles, and trim accessories are fully restored and in excellent condition. The trunk carries the correct black rubber mat and this Corvette rides on correct blackwall tires for a look that’s all business. Present are the spare tire jack as well as the useful owner’s manual. The overall fit and finish of this outstanding car is something that must be closely inspected to be fully appreciated and it is now ready for both NCRS and Bloomington Gold® judging.
