The term Adenauer, as applied to the 300-Series Mercedes-Benz sedans and cabriolet models produced from 1951 to 1962, is unofficially attributed to the legendary former chancellor of Germany, Dr. Konrad Adenauer. As Germany’s political leader during its stunning post-WW II reconstruction and transformation into Europe’s industrial powerhouse, Herr Adenauer is known to have used six of these stately Mercedes-Benz cars during his tenure in office. Mercedes-Benz first unveiled the Adenauer sedan and cabriolet four-door model at the 1951 Paris Auto Show. Its unique appearance, extraordinary engineering, and many features, in comparison to previous post-war models on either side of the Atlantic, were a huge success. It gained instant appeal and virtual instant classic status worldwide.

Two years prior to the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz "Ponton" models, the Type 300 Adenauer limousines were already being built by the company. They were different in many respects from the Ponton models but, to the casual observer, shared a similar outward appearance. The main substantive difference was in the Type 300’s separate body-on-frame construction at its heart, recalling the grand Mercedes-Benz 500, 540, and 770 models of the prewar years. In keeping with Mercedes-Benz practice, the 300 designation arose from its 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder powerplant, a sophisticated unit with single overhead cam (SOHC) valvetrain with a lightweight alloy cylinder head.

These traditionally luxurious yet technologically advanced automobiles were primarily used by governments, heads of state, royalty, and other members of the fast-growing jet-set. Their engineering, luxury, quality, high price, and low production rates placed them at the very top of the already exclusive Daimler-Benz passenger vehicle hierarchy during the 1951-1962 production years. The next 300 series (introduced in late 1954) was the "b" model, featuring upgrades of the finned brake drum, a brake booster, and front door vents. The "d" model was produced from August 1957 until March 1962 with a total of 3,077 units produced. Referred to as the hardtop limousine because all of the side windows, including frames, could now be lowered, it had a longer wheelbase, and more angular rear fenders with enlarged taillights. Power steering and "Artic-Kar" air-conditioning were also introduced as desirable factory options.

Offered from a discerning collector, this 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300a Adenauer sedan was acquired in late 2004. Featuring an excellent color combination of black exterior paintwork over rich red leather upholstery, the stately yet highly drivable 300a is a high-quality example of these legendary elite motorcars. Fog lamps and whitewall tires provide a great period look while the driver enjoys purposeful, driver-centric instrumentation. Passengers are treated to full-width front seating, thanks to the column-mounted shifter for the car’s manual gearbox. Further amenities include a dash-mounted clock and exceedingly rare and desirable Becker Nurburg radio unit. While the engine compartment and legendary 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine could certainly benefit from careful detailing, they are nonetheless properly equipped and retain correct ancillary items. A spare tire, roadside jack, and tool roll accompany the vehicle, as do a fascinating selection of factory-issued manuals including those pertaining to the Becker radio. A rare and unusual offering, this 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300a Adenauer Sedan is a highly desirable, early example celebrating the excellence of Mercedes-Benz and one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century.
