Offered Without Reserve

CHASSIS NO: 63R2075
• Unrestored preservation car
• R2 Paxton supercharger option
• 67,479 miles

289 cid OHV supercharged R2 engine rated at 289 HP, four-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with coil-springs, live rear axle with transverse-link suspension, power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes; wheelbase: 109”

As one of America’s oldest car builders, Studebaker’s heritage went back to the horse drawn carriage. So solid was Studebaker’s carriage business that they even built the famous beer hauler for the Budweiser Clydesdales. Studebaker entered the car business with gusto, but by the early 1960s things weren’t looking good. As the curtain was falling, Studebaker had one more trick up its sleeve. Conceived by Studebaker’s president, Sherwood Egbert and built by Ray Loewy’s design team, the Avanti was put together in just 40 days. By using a fiberglass body and a Hawk 289 V-8 engine, the Avanti quickly became noticed on the street, as there was nothing else like it on the road.

Offered here is an excellent example of this milestone car in the way of an R2 supercharged example in “Avanti Gold.” This is an unrestored car that has just 67,479 miles and carries an excellent degree of preservation. This Avanti is just emerging from an 18-year ownership and was regularly driven to AACA events over the years. Although not a concours car, this Avanti displays very well in all areas and is also a car that can be driven regularly. The fit and finish of this car is excellent and it’s clearly evident that it has been well-cared for over the years. The interior literally presents as new with cream colored upholstery and black carpets. Front seat passengers are treated to comfortable bucket seats and the Avanti script is nicely displayed in the center console that houses the four-speed shifter. Although currently not fitted into the car, this Avanti does have a Studebaker radio that goes with it. All Avantis carried the same look, but what sets this one apart is the R2 option that featured a Paxton SN-60 centrifugal supercharger that put 289 ponies to the pavement. The R2 Avanti engine was based on Studebaker’s 289 V-8, but was built with a compression ratio of 9.0:1. This kind of power put the Avanti on the map as a fast car with a good degree of personal luxury to boot.

The long and sleek lines of Ray Loewy’s design made the Avanti a special car. Its long and low nose was sleek and the absence of brightwork made for a simple and streamlined car. Prospective collectors of preservation cars should look this Avanti over closely in order to fully appreciate its dedication to authenticity.
