Always a source of great competition cars, the glorious brilliant red worn by the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Fiat have been a dominating force around European racetracks for over a century. Firmly residing in this family is Alfa Romeo. The roots of Alfa Romeo go back over 100 years when it was founded by Alexandre Darracq in Milan. By 1911, their racing heritage was solidified with two entries in the Targa Floria. The company has maintained that image through the years with victories at many of Europe’s best tracks including the famous Mille Miglia and Le Mans. Their Formula One cars were feared competitors and their rally cars were virtually unbeatable. Of course, all of this competitive engineering also helped Alfa Romeo build some of the best road cars in the world, a fact that is clearly demonstrated in this stunning 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce Spider 750F that has been fully and authentically restored to factory specifications.

The Veloce Spider offered here is rare in that it was built with the newer type 101 body, and fitted from the factory with a 750 Veloce specification engine. The known history of this Alfa starts in 1960 when it was imported to Hoffman Motors. It was then purchased in 1962 by a popular radio DJ named William “Weird Beard” Vermillion of station WLOF in Orlando, Florida. Mr. Vermillion drove the car for a decade until it was relegated to storage where it did not emerge until 2009. Beginning with a complete car with nearly all of its original parts, it has since been fully restored, and today presents in exceptional condition. Nothing was overlooked in returning this great Italian sports car to its former glory with the body being completely stripped and finished in epoxy primer. It should be noted that the body was found to be very sound. It was then finished off with a gleaming coat of single stage urethane in Alfa Romeo Rosso Chiaro Red. The result is a finish that is not only spectacular, but is also period-correct. All chrome has been refinished to concours show quality and this Alfa rides on Pirelli CA67 tires with correct Boranni wheels. The interior was not overlooked, as it is authentically restored in its original light beige vinyl with red piping and rubber floor mats. As with any great Italian sports car, the driver’s compartment is a true delight to the senses with easy to read gauges mounted directly ahead of the driver and a dash mounted rear view mirror. While the appearance of this Giulietta is stunning, its mechanicals were not overlooked as its engine received a full rebuild with new pistons, liners, bearings, valve guides, and seals. The cylinder head was refinished by Norm Racing and the lower engine work was performed by Universal Automotive and Rebuilding in Las Vegas, NV. The engine sparkles with a polished air intake and breathing is easily handled by a set of two Weber DC03 carburetors and were fully reconditioned. The appearance of the engine compartment is simply stunning with correct markings and all surfaces are clean and tidy. Other components that received attention were a rebuild of the starter, generator, gearbox, exhaust system, a new windshield, new Stayfast convertible top and vinyl boot, and all-new brakes. So detailed is the restoration of this 750F that even all nuts, bolts, and screws were retained and fitted back into their factory position.

There’s nothing quite like a great Italian sports car, and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce Spider 750F is a car that offers excellent performance and handling all while exemplifying the very best in Italian design. Interest in these remarkable cars for the road has grown exponentially in recent years. It’s not surprising, as their combination of unique style, limited production, and exhilarating Alfa Romeo performance are hard to beat. This Giulietta Veloce Spider adds to that a level of restoration that practically ensures success in concours exhibition. At any time, it is advisable to buy one of the best examples of a car available, and a close examination of this Alfa should prove it more than qualifies in that regard.
