There is no name more storied in all automotive history than that of Mercedes-Benz. Its founder Karl Benz literally invented the automobile and, even before the turn of the 20th century, he was at the forefront of automotive technology for years to come. From the pre-war W125 and W154 Grand Prix race cars to the post-war W196 and 300SLR race cars, Mercedes-Benz dominated the competition at the track, winning race after race and accumulating World Championships. Today, that legacy lives on as Mercedes continues to dominate Formula One winning four consecutive World Championships in as many years.

Whereas the original Mercedes-Benz Gullwing was descended from the legendary 300SLR race car of the period, the competition version of the SLS was derived from the street car. The SLS AMG GT3 was developed in accordance with the GT3 regulations of the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) for competition use. With the technical expertise acquired in the development of the GT3, Mercedes-Benz decided to build the ultimate iteration of the SLS model known simply as the 'Black Series'.

The SLS AMG 'Black Series' made its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2012, and the label refers to a specially prepared, highly tuned masterpiece of engineering. Only four previous models have worn the 'Black Series' label, and each one was extremely special and built in very limited numbers. Only 150 'Black Series' examples of the SLS AMG were produced for the world, and each was presold prior to delivery. Starting with an already world class car, Mercedes preceded to build the most powerful naturally aspirated production based car in its history. The hand built 6.2L V-8 engine was extensively revamped and modified to produce 622 horsepower with an 8,000-rpm redline. A revised suspension using the coil-over AMG RIDE CONTROL and AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system were incorporated to cope with the increased power and speed. Additionally, an electronically controlled AMG rear-axle differential lock with a shorter rear axle ratio was used, and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT seven-speed sports transmission was braced and installed 10mm lower in the car to further improve the center of gravity.

More impressive, the engineers at Mercedes proceeded to make a "super light sport" even lighter. Extensive use of carbon fiber throughout the car as well as a host of other modifications shaved over 150 pounds off the regular SLS's already svelte weight. Even the most incremental weight reduction was achieved through the use of such items as a titanium exhaust and a lithium-ion battery allowing the SLS to achieve by far the best power to weight ratio of all AMG 'Black Series' vehicles to date. The interior is functional and at the same time sophisticated, and it makes use of the highest quality leather, Alcantara®, and other materials. Precision workmanship is evident throughout with exquisitely designed details such as the so-called "3D seam".

This example comes from the private collection of a connoisseur of exotic and limited-edition performance cars. The SLS AMG was acquired from the original owner, and it presents virtually as new with just over 2,000 miles on the odometer, and it is one of only five examples produced in Mars Red making it the rarest of all the available factory colors. The car has been perfectly preserved and fully maintained while in his ownership.

Few companies can match the pedigree of a race bred Mercedes-Benz, and the SLS AMG 'Black Series' is the ultimate expression of a race car for the street. It represents the pinnacle of German engineering and performance, and with the trend toward smaller displacement engines and forced induction, it could possibly be the last and greatest iteration of the famed 'Black Series'. Therefore, it is only fitting that four-time Formula One Champion Lewis Hamilton was gifted one of the other four SLS AMG 'Black Series' finished in Mars Red from the factory after winning the F1 World Championship for Mercedes-Benz. As such, this presents a unique opportunity to acquire such a rare specimen and be amongst such elite company.
