CHASSIS NO: 1427A648
• Top-of-the-line example of Ford’s first new postwar models
• Very nicely presented in period livery; factory overdrive
• A true postwar design landmark; renowned Flathead V-8
• Ready to cruise with dual exhaust, “Blue Dots,” and whitewalls

239 cid “8BA” L-head V-8 engine, single two-barrel carburetor, 100 HP at 3,600 RPM, three-speed manual transmission with overdrive, independent coil-spring front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes; wheelbase 114"

As the first new postwar models from Ford, the 1949 lineup broke from tradition with fresh new styling with a lower and wider look that continues to be admired today. Major cues of the new “Shoebox” models included modern, fully integrated fenders and a low, full-width grille delineated by neat chrome trim and punctuated by a faux jet intake at the center. Passenger space was good, with the new Fords built upon a new ladder frame offering a useful, yet trim 114-inch wheelbase.

Mechanical specifications were more sophisticated to match the new styling, with a new wishbone-type front suspension and longitudinal rear springs replacing the former solid front axles and transverse leaf springs. As before, both six-cylinder and V-8 engines were available, and a three-speed manual was the sole transmission available for ’49, with overdrive optional. Standard and upscale Custom trim levels provided further distinction.

When the first new postwar Ford models were released for 1949 at New York’s posh Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, they were not only the first all-new Ford models in more than a decade. Importantly, their introduction on June 10, 1948 preceded Ford’s archrivals Chrysler and GM, gaining valuable press coverage and positioning Ford as “the automaker to beat” in the brave and increasingly expansive postwar era. The 1949 Ford models and their fresh, clean styling drew wide praise and put Ford back on track for the successes yet to come in the 1950s.

Representing the top of Ford’s model range for 1949, this highly attractive Custom Convertible is very nicely presented and equipped. Among its many features, the Ford’s sleek bodylines are enhanced by front and rear bumper guards, dual side view mirrors, a covered convertible-top boot, and rear-fender skirts. The interior features very nice cloth and vinyl upholstery, a pushbutton AM radio, Magic Air heater system, and a remote hood release. The trunk is tidy, consistent with the rest of the car, and equipped with a spare Firestone tire/wheel and hubcap. Riding on proper body-color steel wheels with trim rings and Ford-scripted hubcaps and whitewall radial tires, this lovely 1949 Ford Custom Convertible will provide many miles of cruising enjoyment with factory overdrive. As offered, it is sure to captivate all who experience it, with an unmistakable sound from its Flathead Ford V-8 breathing through dual exhaust outlets, and attractive “Blue Dot” taillights providing the perfect final touch.
