• A completely unrestored original XLCR
• Just 1,650 miles from new
998 cc two-valve 45 degree V-twin engine, 57 HP, four-speed manual gearbox, disc brakes, hydraulically dampened coil spring front suspension, independent Showa coil spring rear
First released in 1977, the XLCR was a bold departure from the usual Harley-Davidson formula. You could call it a Sportster in Cafe Racer clothes, and it was only produced for two years, thus becoming one of the most interesting and collectible Harleys in recent memory, and certainly one of the boldest design statements from the period that AMF operated Harley-Davidson. The XLCR was the fastest Sportster produced in the era, and was designed for solo riding only.
With design input from then-new styling chief Willie G. Davidson, the short-lived XLCR utilized a very lightweight frame and the bulletproof Sportster power plant, with a streamlined gas tank and tail section reminiscent of the XR750 dirt track bike, which was first penned by legend Dean Wixom. The sporty look was complemented by low-rise handlebars and a small bikini-fairing up front, in all black, of course. It featured large for the era 18” rear and 19” front Morris seven spoke alloy mag wheels and triple disc brakes. Everyone notices the “Siamese” two-into-two exhaust system, done in black chrome. Production ceased in early 1978 with just 1,923 copies built in 1977, assuring the lucky owners a cult-like collectible status.
Some motorcycles lead a hard life; and some, like this fine Café Racer, are lucky enough to be pampered from new. It spent much of its life on display at a prominent Harley-Davidson dealership; it has been exercised and has recently received a major servicing, making it completely road ready for your riding pleasure. It has been meticulously preserved in 100% stock condition from new, riding on its Dunlop 290 Super Sport tires.
With just 1,650 original miles, and from a prominent collection, some think the toughest choice here will be whether to preserve its fantastic condition, or crank it up and enjoy the brute power and performance on a twisty country road. This fine XLCR is a rare and highly collectible American motorcycle, exuding all the power, performance and style that only Harley-Davidson can deliver.
