CHASSIS NO: WP27F9G178085
• Attractive and enjoyable late-1960s convertible
• Equipped with 318 V-8, auto, power top and brakes, AM radio
• Excellent “Triple Black” colors and Magnum ‘500’ wheels

318 cid V-8 engine, single two-barrel carburetor, three-speed automatic transmission, independent front suspension with torsion bars and coil springs, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, power-assisted hydraulic brakes; wheelbase: 115”

For 1965, the Dodge model lineup was reorganized with the new intermediate Coronet featuring big-car styling, power, and amenities. Bridging the wide gap between the compact Dart and the full-size Polara, the Coronet rode a 117-inch wheelbase and was featured Chrysler’s stout unit-body structure. Ranging basic to glamorous, the Coronet was offered in two- or four-door sedan and six-passenger station wagon forms, the upscale Coronet 440 in four-door sedan, two-door hardtop, convertible, and six- or nine-passenger station wagons, all the way up to the Coronet 500 in two-door hardtop and convertible body styles only.

The choice of sporting and upwardly-mobile drivers, the Coronet 500 included all Coronet 440 features plus a padded instrument panel, front bucket seats, and a center console with a floor shifter for the available four-speed manual or 727 Torqueflite automatic transmissions. Specific wheel covers, trim, and emblems further defined the model. While the basic Coronet was available with Chrysler’s excellent “Slant Six” as the base engine, the Coronet 500 started with the 180-hp, 273 cubic-inch V-8, with five available options including the 230-hp 318 V-8 and 265-hp 361 V-8. Higher-performance options included the 330-hp 383, the 365-hp 426 “Street Wedge,” and incredibly rare 426-R “Race Hemi.”

The Coronet was a strong seller, with the majority powered by V-8 engines. Magazine road testers agreed, with Car Life editors declaring the Coronet “…one of the soundest, technically and mechanically, cars being offered in the under $3,000 arena.” Coronet sales were heightened from success on NASCAR ovals and at the drags, including Dick Landy’s wild A/Factory Experimental (A/FX) Coronet, which prompted Chrysler executives to issue a telegram with a directive prohibiting wheelies.

The Coronet and its B-Body stablemate Plymouth Belvedere were restyled for 1966/67 and again for 1968/69. This Jefferson, Michigan-built 1969 Dodge Coronet ‘500’ Convertible from The Chuck Runyon Estate Collection is a nice, driver-quality example. Finished in black with a matching interior and convertible top, it is powered by a healthy two-barrel 318 cid V-8 engine cooled by an aluminum radiator and mated to a column-shifted Torqueflite automatic transmission. An accessory gauge cluster mounted underneath the dash monitors vital functions. Amenities include a power top, power steering, and a pushbutton AM radio. Rolling on a set of Magnum ‘500’ wheels mounting raised white-letter radial tires, this 1969 Dodge Coronet ‘500’ Convertible is ready to enjoy with the top up or down.
