6,223 cc OHV V-8 engine, twin SU carburetors, 220 HP (est.) at 5,000 RPM, Hydra-Matic four-speed automatic transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs, live rear axle with leaf springs, servo-assisted hydraulic four-wheel drum brakes; wheelbase: 127”

When Rolls-Royce released the Silver Cloud III, there was a mixed reaction to its design. Most notable was in terms of the new headlamp arrangement, using four instead of two. That one change may have brought scorn from long-time marque enthusiasts, but for those looking for the ultimate in a posh motorcar, the Cloud III heralded a number of improvements. A higher-compression V-8 meant more power, “estimated” at 220 HP because the factory never released that information. Suspension improvements included softer springs, and braking was reported to be more responsive. A smoother ride and quieter operation enhanced the passenger experience. Available in two wheelbase lengths, most customers ordered the standard saloon while just 253 long wheelbase editions were delivered from Crewe, with many custom-tailored to the client’s desires. With the Series III discontinued at the end of the 1965 model year, so ended an era of distinctive and prestigious design in this legendary marque’s long history.

We are pleased to present a remarkable example with this stunning 1965 Silver Cloud III LWB Saloon. According to a copy of the original build card, this car was ordered for U.S. delivery and its first home was in the Carolinas. Retained by the original owners until the 1980s, the second owner purchased the car and placed it into long-term storage. When the current owner acquired the car, it was complete and solid. Given a thorough “ground-up,” body-on-the-frame restoration, all the original exterior panels were removed from the car and carefully refinished to factory specs, with only minor corrosion issues found in the rear fenders, which were expertly restored as new. Finished in Mason’s Black as when new, it shows off the silky-smooth coachwork. The original aluminum body panels line up at or above factory standards, including all four doors, the deck lid, and even the bonnet. The renowned Rolls-Royce V-8 engine was completely gone through as well as the major operating systems such as brakes, cooling, fuel and electrical, ensuring this car will not only have the look of royalty, it will operate to standards that would even delight Her Majesty. One feature that could not be omitted for luxury motoring is the factory air-conditioning system. Sharing the same upgraded components used for the Phantom V limousines, cooling air is delivered to both front and rear-seat passengers.

Looking at the interior, it has been fitted with the finest leathers replicating the original Parchment. This long-wheelbase Cloud III came from the factory without the partition, yielding greater legroom for driver and front seat passengers with plenty of space for those in the rear seats. Back seat passengers can take advantage of the fold-down tables made of the finest woods and professionally finished. Other trim in the interior has also been restored to its factory luster including the door garnishes and dashboard. About the only upgrade in the car is a custom-fitted AM-FM-cassette unit, believed to have been installed by the original owners.

Since completion, limited test miles have been travelled, during which this stunning Rolls-Royce performed admirably on both surface streets and the open highway. In speaking with the owner, one could easily discern his love and enthusiasm for this car was genuine, which is evident in the workmanship invested into its restoration. A fitting tribute to Britain's greatest luxury car maker, this Rolls-Royce represents the end of an era in which, according to original documentation, this car is understood to be the third from the last of all Silver Clouds ever produced. Its been said that no automobile has greater appeal around the globe than that of the Rolls-Royce. Seldom seen examples such as this one are highly sought-after and widely appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts everywhere, and with good reason.
