5.6-litre SOHC V-8 engine, Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection, 227 BHP (SAE net), four-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel independent suspension with front wishbones and coil springs, hydraulic four-wheel disc brakes; wheelbase: 96.7"

In 1971, Mercedes-Benz introduced the all-new 350SL as the replacement for its beloved and long-running 230/250/280SL, with the design internally designated Type R107. Design of the new car was executed by Bruno Sacco, who was also responsible for the design work on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans of the 1970s. Somewhat larger and more rounded in its overall proportions than its predecessor, the resulting 350SL was based upon a steel unibody structure, rather than the aluminum body panels of the 280SL, along with a more luxuriously appointed interior. Faster than ever before, the new SL delivered more predictable handling and safety features extending to the most minute detail. As expected, Mercedes-Benz constantly refined and updated the R107, which remained in production for nearly 20 years in five variants. Powered by a 5.6-litre V-8 developing 227 horsepower and 279 pounds-feet of torque, the 560SL was the ultimate expression available from 1985 through 1989. As always, Mercedes-Benz SL ownership, particularly in reference to the 560SL, clearly signified that one had indeed “arrived” and this cachet continues unchanged today.

This exceptional 560SL was delivered new to Arizona to local Mercedes dealer The Phoenix Motor Company. Equipped with both soft and hard tops, it was finished as it appears today, in Nautical Blue Metallic paint over gray leather with wood accents. It was first owned by local Phoenix resident, Betty Lou Neils, who took delivery on December 10, 1986, according to the warranty book. A lady with a sporting disposition, she negotiated the upgraded Momo five-spoke alloy wheels that remain on the car today. As seen from the service stamps, Betty used the car sparingly, covering only 14,000 miles by June 1989. Over the next 5 ½ years, she covered 6,000 additional miles until her passing, at which time, the car went to her son. From November 1994 until recently, he exercised the car regularly, but used it very little, maintaining it meticulously and storing it in a climate-controlled garage in the Scottsdale area. Now, showing a genuine and Carfax® -certified 44,184 miles from new, the car is simply exceptional throughout.

Today, this fine Mercedes-Benz presents wonderfully in original and unadulterated condition. Brightwork is original and excellent, as is all glass. The wheels are scuff-free, and the tires retain plenty of tread. The soft top appears original to the car and has a perfectly clear rear window and just a couple of minor, repaired splits. Mechanically, the car is exquisite, starting easily and idling smoothly with great response and power delivery, shifting perfectly through the automatic transmission with a nice kickdown. Brakes, suspension, and steering all feel as-new. All electrical systems work perfectly, the air-conditioning blows Mercedes-cold, and the original. Becker Grand Prix radio is fully operational and complete with electric antenna. The interior is excellent with clean carpets and only minor blemishes on the driver’s mat. Seats are excellent with only a very high-quality repair in all original materials to the driver’s seat bolster, as it was scuffed from use. All panels, dash, and other surfaces are excellent and original. The First Aid kit is complete and possibly never opened until recently. The car is accompanied by a spare wheel and jack that seem to have never been removed from the car, a full set of tools including two top tools, still in the original roll and protective plastic bag, and the Momo wheel wrench still resides in the original leather pouch. The original window sticker and a full set of keys are included. This sale represents an opportunity to acquire an appreciating and very useable classic Mercedes with impeccable ownership history and mileage in superbly original, virtual “time-warp” condition.
