3,442 cc DOHC inline six-cylinder engine, 210 HP at 5,750 RPM, Tremec five-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension with transverse wishbones and torsion bars, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes; wheelbase: 102”

During World War II, Jaguar founder William Lyons and his engineering staff designed and developed what would become the world’s first twin-cam automobile engine for volume-production. After the war’s end, a short-wheelbase chassis and swoopy two-seat sports roadster body were married to this new engine, dubbed the ‘XK’. Interestingly, when the resulting XK120 debuted at the 1948 Earls Court (London) Motor Show, it was merely intended to showcase the new ‘XK’ engine while the production of its intended recipient, Jaguar’s new Mk V Saloon, was delayed. However, the XK120 made a sensation at Earls Court, after which one journalist commented “… all preconceived notions as to what was a series-production sports car disappeared overnight.” From this point, the XK120 redefined Jaguar as a builder of exceptional sports cars offering great value. The XK120 also provided phenomenal performance. The new car’s model designation, intended to represent its top speed, proved an understatement when factory test driver Ron Sutton was clocked on a Belgian road in a modified example at over 132 miles per hour! In competition, the XK120 quickly chalked up numerous important victories and its basic engine design went on to power Jaguars to five victories at Le Mans between 1951 and 1957.

Production of the XK120 continued into 1954, with the Roadster supplemented by the Fixed-Head Coupe in 1951 and the Drophead Coupe in 1953. Just 2,680 Fixed-Head Coupes were produced, with the model squarely aimed at the American export market. With real roll-up side windows and a beautifully finished real wood dashboard, just like Jaguar’s handsomely built and finished Saloon cars, the XK120 FHC delivered utility and luxury that was hitherto unknown in the world of sporting cars, with one of the most beautifully curved rooflines ever applied to a sporting motorcar.

Built on April 8, 1953 and dispatched to the United States six days later, this XK120 Fixed-Head Coupe was sold new via Max Hoffman’s New York Jaguar distributorship. Striking in presentation as offered and set up for an outstanding driving experience to match its great looks, it features British Racing Green paintwork and Biscuit leather upholstery, wonderfully complemented by the completely restored wooden dashboard greeting driver and passenger inside the snug and sporting interior. Numbered S681056, this original “Special Equipment” XK120 received an engine swap at some point in its history, with the original unit replaced with a higher-specification XK140 MC engine producing 210 horsepower. A previous owner restored the car with this later engine installed. In addition to the welcome power boost provided by the newer engine, driving enjoyment is further enhanced with the original Moss four-speed gearbox having been replaced by a modern Tremec five-speed unit allowing fuller use of the engine’s power band. Other modifications to enhance the driving experience of this car include, a Bates stainless-steel exhaust system, driving lights, and new gel-type batteries with a convenient plug-in charger. The chrome wire wheels are shod with radial tires, consistent with the other thoughtful updates made to provide the ability to enjoy the Jaguar’s wonderful classic looks and experience and ensure its drivability on modern roads and under today’s demanding driving conditions. While maintained and used as an outstanding driver car, this XK120 retains most of its original tools within a new roll and a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate lists the car’s original data. Restored and set up for a great drive while maintaining its iconic looks, this XK120 FHC offers a great opportunity to acquire a car that is suitable for many of today’s best classic driving events.
