There’s nothing like a car from the 1950s. Bright colors, wild fins, and powerful engines were the hallmarks of a decade that saw style in the American automobile rise to a whole new level. Never before or since has there been a car that mimicked space travel, the jet age, and speed like that of the cars from the fabulous 1950s. Leading the way was Buick, who offered a car for every purpose. Whether it was a station wagon, sedan, coupe, or convertible, Buick stood ready for the needs of any car buyer in 1958. Buick’s fine line of cars for the 1950s featured the Roadmaster, Super, and Century, but in 1958 they reintroduced one of their grandest names in the top-of-the-line Limited. Even the name ‘Limited’ invoked a grand era as it was actually the name used for elite passenger trains that were extremely fast and usually ran overnight express runs with very few stops. The Buick Limited rode on a 127.5-inch wheelbase and carried all the dazzling chrome of the other Buick’s, plus no less than 12 vertical louvers in the rear quarters.

The example offered here is finished in Buick’s captivating Seminole Red with a matching red leather interior and makes a dramatic statement about American car design of the late 1950s. Starting at the front, this Limited wears a massive grille that’s adorned with no less than 160 chrome square insets and twin chromium bullets flanked by turn signal lights that are housed in their own streamlined nacelles. The Buick name is spelled out in separate die cast letters and twin “V” styled gun sight ornaments ride on each front fender that used Buick’s new-for-1958 quad headlamp set up. There is literally no body panel on the Limited that is untouched by gleaming chrome, especially down the sides of its almost 19-foot long body. At the rear, its twin jet-like fins carry a sharp angle into tail lamps that are louvered. Its gigantic rear bumper runs all the way from the rear wheel arches with enough chrome to almost build another car. The elegantly written Limited name appears at the front of the rear quarter panel and tells the world that this is a special car. The interior is everything one would expect from a Buick with beautifully pleated red leather that’s soft and supple. The dashboard layout is straight out of a science fiction movie with futuristic gauges, jet-like pods, and dazzling chrome. This Buick still retains its AM radio and also has a clock above the glove box. Gadgets were all the rage in the 1950s, and this Limited is equipped with GM’s Autronic Eye that uses a light-sensing phototube to automatically switch the headlamps from high to low when an oncoming car approached. Power for the Limited comes from Buick’s 364 cubic-inch overhead valve V-8 engine rated at 300 horsepower, mated to a two-speed Dynaflow automatic transmission. The engine compartment in this car is impeccably detailed and presents as new with correct colors, authentic hose clamps, and all wiring properly sorted. Indeed, the attention paid to the detail in this engine’s presentation speaks to the quality of this car’s restoration.

As one of America’s oldest car companies, the Buick name has stood tall for well over 100 years. Whether it’s a Brass Era Buick or a modern Regal, the Buick story parallels the history of the motorcar. This Buick Limited convertible from the glory days of 1958 is a car that turns heads wherever it goes. It’s also a very rare car as 1 of just 839 built in what would be both the first and last season for the Limited. For the very best from the era that proved to be the very pinnacle of American automotive design, this 1958 Limited is a car that’s ready for the concours show field.
