Launched in 1993 and first available in the United States during 1994 for the 1995 model year, the 993-generation 911 series marks the final and ultimate expression of Porsche’s original air-cooled, six-cylinder design. The evolution of the 911 was stunning, given that Porsche claimed the 993 contained 70-80 percent new or improved content and the outgoing 964 series had already marked a massive change from its predecessor. Retaining only the roof and front deck lid of the 964, the new 993-series body was immensely attractive with aggressively bulged fenders and a pinched “Coke bottle” waist. Neatly integrated bumpers and reclined headlamps enhanced the new car’s aerodynamic profile. Of particular importance for driving enthusiasts and racers, the 993-body structure was some 20 percent stiffer than that of the 964.

Underneath its seductive outer skin, the 993 heralded the arrival of an all-new rear suspension system. Named “LSA” for Light, Stable, and Agile, it was an all-aluminum, multi-link setup that at once brought improved handling and ride quality, while reducing noise. Detail refinements included a slightly updated interior, enlarged brakes, enhanced ABS, and one-inch wider wheels. While the air-cooled, normally aspirated engine remained at 3.6 litres of displacement, maintenance was eased with a new hydraulic valvetrain and output dramatically increased to 272 horsepower in “standard” tune with the new VarioRam intake system. A new six-speed gearbox allowed drivers to fully exploit the engine’s wider power band.

Soon placed at the top of the line was the 993 Turbo, which debuted at the March 1995 Geneva Show, featuring a 959-derived all-wheel drivetrain and twin turbochargers for incredible performance. As the end of 993-series production neared and the new 996 models were readied for their debut, Rolf Sprenger’s elite Porsche Exclusive department secured a batch of the last 993-series bodyshells and took the Turbo concept to a whole new level with the one-year-only Turbo S for the 1997 model year. Packing 424 horsepower for the U.S. and 450 HP for “RoW” (Rest of World) markets, the 993 Turbo S featured myriad updates throughout, most notably including vented rear fenders, yellow brake calipers, a special rear spoiler, four-tipped exhaust, and Aerokit front spoiler with special ventilation and fog-lamp placement. From introduction, the Turbo S was – and remains – an unqualified tour de force as one of the most powerful and sophisticated Porsche models ever unleashed to that time, with stunning performance credentials including exceptional grip, handling, explosive acceleration, and a 186-mph top end. Only 183 were produced and if one ever comes to market, committed Porsche enthusiasts and collectors quickly snap them up.
