371 cid “Oldsmobile Rocket” V-8 engine, J2 triple-carburetor intake, 312 HP, Hydra-Matic four-speed automatic transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes; wheelbase: 122”

As one of the first companies to ever build a production motorcar, Oldsmobile was always a leader. When they introduced their modern new overhead-valve “Rocket” V-8 engine in the lighter-weight 88 series for 1949, it resulted in perhaps one of the first muscle cars on American roads. Popularized by Ike Turner and his Rhythm Kings’ hit song of 1951, the “Rocket 88” also became a cultural phenomenon that laid the foundation for the uniquely American performance car on the street and NASCAR oval tracks. Olds stepped up its game further for 1957 with the release of the high-performance J2 option. This triple carburetor set-up unleashed the 371 cubic-inch V-8’s full potential. For everyday driving, the J2 used its center carburetor but, when extra power was needed, a punch of the accelerator opened up the two outer four barrels for full effect. For 1957, the J2 option helped propel Oldsmobile to some stellar wins at the race track including five NASCAR Grand National victories.

A dazzling example of Oldsmobile’s glorious years of the 1950s, this 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible features the J2 intake system and benefits from a full restoration that has been very well-preserved ever since, with little evidence of wear as offered. It has been properly stored and maintained and only used in favorable weather. This Super 88 Convertible is handsomely finished in Ice Green and rides on a set of wire wheels mounting period-style wide whitewall tires. All chrome gleams and is highly polished for a like-new appearance. Oldsmobile’s signature massive front grille runs the full width of the car, but it’s the little touches that identify this car as an icon of the 1950s. Oldsmobile spared nothing in the design of the Super 88 for 1957 with side body trim spears and twin jet-inspired fender ornaments echoing the central hood spear. The front fenders carry the ‘Super 88’ crest in an overlaid rocket theme that’s pure 1950s “Jet Age” fare. At the rear is a large wraparound bumper with huge and imposing taillights mounted high in the body. At a time when Cadillac and Chevrolet were reaching for the stars with their tail fins, Oldsmobile had a design that was smooth and tasteful as it did not rise above the body line. The interior carries the jet-inspired appearance to match the outside of the car, finished in a tasteful upholstery with handsome green carpeting. The padded wraparound dash is equipped with a “space-age” central speedometer flanked by a host of chrome buttons, dials, and control switches. Oldsmobile’s oval and crosshair crest is also found at the center of the steering wheel. The restoration of this Super 88 is validated in the fine upholstery stitching and nicely polished trim work. As a full-size cruiser from the 1950s, this Super 88 has more than enough room for both front and rear passengers. The engine compartment in this Super 88 is nicely detailed and speaks directly to the level of care and preservation this car has received since its restoration. Even more impressive is the J2 intake system that kicks this car’s horsepower rating to 312. As a $395 option, the J2 wasn’t cheap but, for power to spare, there was nothing like it in ’57. In fact, the J2 was not even recommended by Oldsmobile for street use, but that didn’t stop everyone from ordering it. Amenities in this Super 88 include power steering, power brakes, and a power top. Also present with this Super 88 is extensive documentation including all restoration receipts, restoration photos, service manuals, and several pieces of period advertising materials.

The 1950s are filled with some of the best cars that ever rolled out of Detroit. This beautifully styled Super 88 Convertible is not only the quintessential cruiser from the late 1950s, it also sports a powerful V-8 with the rare J2 intake system. Certainly, top-down driving on a fine summer evening doesn’t get any better than in a 1950s convertible, and this Oldsmobile is ready to enjoy.
