British MI6 agent James Bond has never been a man to drive ordinary cars. Through the years, 007 has been at the wheel of such great cars as Bentley, Sunbeam, Lotus, BMW, and Aston Martin. For the 1999 film, The World Is Not Enough, Bond drove one of the best cars available at the time, a BMW Z8. Fast, sleek, and projecting the ultimate image of an international agent, the Z8 carried Bond through most of the movie until meeting its demise at the teeth of a saw blade where it was cut in half. Fortunately, the example offered here has escaped the years unscathed and has led a preserved and well-cared for life. Indeed, the word preservation is sometimes overused but, in terms of originality, this could very well be the best in the world.

Offered here from the original owner, with a mere 3,998 miles from new is this BMW Z8 Alpina has had the good fortune of leading a pampered life. Bought new as a birthday present for a physician from his wife, this Z8 has always been garaged and driven only sparingly in good weather. This royal treatment has led to a car that carries an astounding degree of originality and preservation. Everything about this Z8 carries the appearance and mechanical condition of a new car. BMW built only 555 Z8s for the world market and they were truly a world class sports car. Riding on a 98.6-inch wheelbase, the Z8 represented the very pinnacle of BMW performance. There was no question that the Z8 was an instant classic, as it sold for $128,000 and was built with an all-aluminum chassis and body. So perfected was the Z8 that it actually outperformed the Ferrari 360 Modena. As an “instant classic” many Z8s were preserved, but the example offered looks like it could sit on the showroom floor. In addition, all its factory accessories are still with the car including the hard top complete with rolling storage rack, car cover, tool kit, spare tire jack, first aid kit, head rest windscreen, convertible top boot cover, and leather key pouch. So complete are the accessories for this Z8 that it still retains its factory Motorola cell phone. Finished in a radiant Titanium Silver Metallic, the lines of the Z8 Alpina were actually designed as a modern interpretation of the famous BMW 507, a car that remains an ultimate sports car classic. The fit and finish on this example is clean and clear with no paint fading, chips, or scratches found. Innovation was a hallmark with the Z8 and included the use of neon exterior lighting with the taillights and turn indicators powered by neon tubes. The interior of this car presents as new with beautifully crafted seats in two-tone black and red leather. The marvel of BMW’s engineering is clearly evident in the driver’s compartment that is clean and uncluttered with a vast array of multifunction controls including all windows and mirrors operated by one switch and a center mounted instrument cluster allowing the driver an unobstructed view of the road. Power for this BMW comes from a 4.8-litre V-8 with 375 horsepower. The engine compartment on this example carries all correct factory hoses, belts, clamps, and wiring while all painted surfaces are clean with a factory appearance. All this power finds its way to the road with large 20-inch wheels that takes handling to a whole new level. Indeed, for sheer power in a road-tuned car, the BMW Z8 has no equal.

BMW’s roadsters are without a doubt some of the finest in the world. Decades of competition have allowed the company to truly refine the ultimate road car. For just four years, BMW built the Z8 and it was a car that combined excellent performance with the Grand Touring experience.

As a one-owner, extremely low mileage original with factory accessories, and pristine appearance, this Z8 Alpina carries a level of preservation that makes it worthy of museum status, but it’s also a car that begs to be driven on the open road. For the very finest in the BMW driver experience, this highly sought-after example is ready to deliver.
