In an unprecedented move, Ford closed down its assembly lines for nearly six months in 1927 to retool for a new model so different from the Model T that early announcements simply called it “The New Ford,” but soon, the vehicle was officially named the Model A. Introduced in October 1927 as a 1928 model, the Model A featured a myriad of advanced features and a greatly simplified driving experience. Safety was of paramount importance and the Model A was equipped to match with four-wheel brakes, and it was the first low-priced production vehicle to be equipped with shatterproof safety glass. The Model A was offered in a wide variety of body styles that rivaled the beauty of some of the finest luxury cars of the era, now painted in a rich variety of colors and trimmed with bright nickel-plated accessories.

Model A production continued until August 31, 1931 with 4,320,446 built in all. Pricing was remarkably low, ranging in 1928 from $380 for the roadster to $690 for the four-door sedan, offering Ford’s characteristically strong value for the money. The year 1930 would bear witness to the 20 millionth Ford produced and the company would beat Chevrolet in total production, albeit by several thousand cars.

Handsomely presented throughout, Jimmie Taylor’s 1930 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan continues to benefit from a well-preserved, high-quality restoration that was performed with strong attention to detail. Finished in a striking two-tone color combination that allows the good looks of the Tudor body style to shine through, accented by a black padded roof, cream wire wheels and whitewall tires, this captivating Model A is highly equipped with desirable period accessories. Among them are very nice brightwork and chrome-plated bumpers, a Ford-scripted Moto-Meter, chrome “eyebrows” over proper Ford-scripted headlight lenses, twin cowl lamps, dual covered side-mounted spares with chrome retaining straps and side-view mirrors, a period Unity spotlight, a full-width steel sun visor, rear luggage rack and trunk, and twin taillights. The Tudor’s interior compartment is surprisingly luxurious, with very nicely fitted and presented upholstery and carpeting, individual front seats, rear-seat armrests, a wooden shift knob, electric windshield wipers, an attractively chromed instrument panel containing an ammeter and speedometer/odometer/trip odometer, and roll-down rear side windows. The engine bay is well restored, tidy and attractive, and the venerable Model A engine is equipped with a vintage Auto-Lite exhaust manifold heater – a fascinating period accessory. In sum, this 1930 Ford Model A is a beautiful example of one of Ford’s most important designs.
