By the early 1980s, when many observers in the motoring press believed the time had come and gone for Lamborghini’s long-running Countach, the debut of Ferrari’s Testarossa ironically gave the Countach and its maker a brand-new lease on life. Building upon the already formidable foundation provided by the Countach LP500S (alternatively known as the LP5000S), Italian engineering legend Giulio Alfieri masterminded cutting-edge upgrades to Lamborghini’s venerable DOHC V-12 engine that had been developed by Giotto Bizzarini and produced, with few modifications, since the early 1960s. Among the updates were an enlarged 5,167 cc cylinder block, revised induction system, and four-valve cylinder heads to unleash the Countach 5000QV, with “QV” denoting the new “Quattrovalvole” four-valve cylinder heads. A comparison test of the various Countach models in UK magazine Classic & Sports Car during the 2000s summed up the QV’s impact best with the bold statement, “At a stroke, the Countach was relevant again.”

The 25th Anniversary Countach, launched for 1989, celebrated Lamborghini’s Silver Anniversary and succeeded the 5000QV as the car’s triumphant final iteration, with more than 500 updates in all. Horacio Pagani spearheaded design, including integral front-brake cooling ducts, a slightly raised nose, and a new rear bumper. Lower body cladding was fitted and the radiator air intakes behind the car’s iconic scissor-doors were now body-color and incorporated leading edge strakes. Suspension updates and new Pirelli P-Zero tires enhanced the car’s already massive grip. Interior revisions included power windows, new power-adjustable seats, a new steering wheel, and improved air-conditioning. The 25th Anniversary model was a most fitting swan song for the long-lived Countach, with only 657 built in all.

This 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary is undoubtedly one of the most honest and highly original examples available, very nicely “ticking the boxes” for desirability among knowledgeable collectors and enthusiasts. It was completed during June 1989 by Nuova Automobili Lamborghini SpA at the company’s storied facilities in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, finished in black paint over cream leather upholstery, complete with the optional rear wing and Alpine high-end audio system. Shipped new to the United States, the Countach was purchased new by one Mr. Vitols, a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 30, 1990 from authorized Lamborghini dealer F.C. Kerbeck & Sons. Carrying a sticker price of $154,000, the Countach was purchased by Mr. Vitols with an additional $66,000 dealer markup to secure his new Lamborghini.

A large dossier containing all records from new documents the history of this very special 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary from purchase to the present, including the window sticker, bill of sale, all purchase paperwork, payment check stubs, insurance paperwork, and all service records to 2015. Mr. Vitols was a very meticulous owner, having the Countach faithfully serviced only at the selling dealer and maintaining it in unmodified factory-original condition. Overall, the Countach can be summarized as a top-tier, preservation-class example, retaining a good portion of the original paint and all original upholstery, glass, and trim. The paint has aged and shows typical light crazing in some areas, which nonetheless provides an age-appropriate patina and sense of honesty to the presentation of this very rare and iconic Countach.

Meticulously maintained for its entire lifetime with regularly scheduled services performed and recorded at the authorized dealer for the first quarter-century of existence, followed by professional care to the present, this Countach benefits from a recent major service performed during 2015. Accordingly, this 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary offers the chance to acquire one of the most widely recognized supercars ever produced in its well-preserved and highly original form. In addition to the original owner’s manual and books in their leather storage pouch, it includes the tool roll, roadside jack, spare assembly, and an extraordinary document and history file including clean Carfax and Autocheck reports.
