In the history of the automobile, nothing is as brilliant as the outrageous designs of the 1950s. Unofficially known as the “decade of innocence,” it was an era of automotive design that was like no other. It all started when the design team of Harley Earl started building cars that were longer, lower, wider, and more extravagant than anything ever seen before. Bumpers began carrying enough chrome to light up Broadway, interiors carried gadgets and creature comforts that were previously unheard of, and the jet-inspired fins began to grow far beyond anyone’s imagination. Yes, the 1950s were like no other time in the American automotive landscape, and riding on the very pinnacle of this era of extravagance was the 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible. Measuring in at an enormous 223.4-inches long, it was a car that said you had arrived and were here to buy the place. The Eldorado Biarritz took beautifully styled luxury to the next level with an imposing front bumper, twin front fender mounted chrome stabilizers, beautifully styled rear fins, and a dashboard that looked like jewelry under glass.

The 1958 Eldorado Biarritz offered here checks all the right boxes as a car from the very heart of the jet-inspired 1950s. Finished in Cadillac’s classic black with a bright red interior, it’s a car that directly epitomizes what the era was all about. This Eldorado wears a 10-year-old restoration that returned it to factory-new condition and it has been superbly cared for ever since. Nothing was overlooked in returning it to its former glory as proven by its status as a Grand National winner in Pomona, California. It has since gone on to win several Best-in-Shows at several concours events. This is also a numbers-matching car that runs as well as it looks. All the fine trim appointments associated with the Eldorado Biarritz are accounted for on this Cadillac, including its signature chrome plated lower rear quarters that carry a brilliant shine. The fit and finish of this Eldorado is excellent with all its doors and panels in good alignment. The interior was finished by Jenkins of North Carolina and carries the highest level of detail. Indeed, its brilliant red interior looks absolutely stunning against its black body. Sitting behind the wheel of this impressive car, while overlooking the dashboard landscape, is truly an overload of delight to the senses. A venerable sea of gauges, dials, and numbers fill the eyes and gives the sense that one is in control of something more than just a car, and perhaps that’s just what the Eldorado Biarritz is. The paint is amazingly brilliant and deep, the chrome gleams like new, and all glass is excellent. It also carries a power top that’s finished in black canvas and is accompanied by a hard parade boot. Power for this Eldorado comes from a 365 cubic-inch V-8 with a four-barrel carburetor. The engine compartment is beautifully sorted with correct colors, hoses, clamps, and wiring throughout and is topped off by the signature bat wing air cleaner. There was never a time when Detroit had built something so grand, so opulent, and so pretty. From its beautifully styled body to its turbine inspired hubcaps, this Eldorado Biarritz Convertible is a car like no other.

The Eldorado Biarritz was not a car for the ordinary. Certainly, if ordinary was the order of the day, anyone could buy a new Chevrolet for just around $2,000. But, for anyone that had an extra $7,500 in their pocket, a new Eldorado Biarritz could be parked in the driveway. The Eldorado Biarritz convertible was Cadillac’s crowning achievement for 1958 and just 815 found new owners that year, making this example a very rare car. The iconic 1950s cruiser is always welcomed at car shows or the concours field and this Eldorado Biarritz Convertible is in excellent condition and benefits from a superior restoration that needs nothing but a smiling driver.
