German engineering has always been a hallmark in the world of excellence. Whether it’s the common Volkswagen or an incredible Auto Union Type C, the standard set by precision manufacturing is one that many have aspired to achieve. Certainly one of Germany’s best is Mercedes-Benz. As one of the foundational members in the automotive world, they have produced some of the finest luxury cars known. A pinnacle of this heritage is found in the 500 SL, a car that featured, power, speed, and luxury beyond compare. Built from 1982-1989, the 500 SL proved to be a successful car for Mercedes-Benz and they are recognized as a superior roadster with plenty of power and excellent handling. Style, speed, and luxury all come together in this Grand Touring car from one of the world’s best car builders.
This is a Euro market car that, according to the accompanying copy of the original purchase order, was imported to its first U.S. owner, Gilbert Widener in Dallas, Texas in May of 1984. DOT/EPA completion was certified in the same month by Exotic Engineering and Mr. Widener was on the road. Finished in brilliant Signal Red its appearance is nicely enhanced by chrome wheels, European bumpers, and a rear spoiler. As the European model, it also carries the larger horsepower engine that makes this car a truly spirited performer with its original 5.0L V-8 and factory Tri-Y headers. The second Waco, Texas owner acquired the car in 2003 and the current owner, also a Texan, took ownership in 2006. All three owners have serviced the car consistently and it presently shows just 31,500 miles.
The quality, fit, and finish of Mercedes-Benz cars is clearly evident in the beauty and shine of this example that has been well cared for and garaged kept. Mercedes spared no expense in the sleek design of their premier roadster. It rides on a 97.6-inch wheelbase and carries a low stance that enhances its sleek lines. Mercedes-Benz performance specifications recorded a 0-60 time on just 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 140 miles per hour. Driving is also a pleasure with its automatic transmission that shifts smoothly and effortlessly. On the inside, this 500 SL is everything one would expect in a fine German touring car. The upholstery is finished in quality tan leather and the dashboard is a true driver’s environment with all gauges mounted straight ahead and a large center console that neatly houses the shifter and factory Blaupunkt radio. All door panels, leather trim, and carpets are in excellent condition. All glass is clean and clear and the comfortable seats let you know that you’re at the controls of a world class touring car. This 500 SL just had a new convertible top installed and it also comes with its factory hardtop, original tool kit, tire jack, maintenance booklet, owners manual and authentic Mercedes-Benz safety kit.
This Euro spec 500 SL is a car that is more than ready for many more miles of fine touring of any distance and properly represents the fastest production model of the R107 chassis. With just three careful owners and limited mileage, it's poised to increase in value and be driven - just the way the Germans intended.
