ESTIMATE: $210,000 - $240,000
CHASSIS NO: 177569C
• Desirable and decidedly sporting body by Dietrich
• Equipped with many desirable period accessories
• A great candidate for touring, continued showing, and enjoyment

385 cid L-head inline eight-cylinder engine, single Packard carburetor, 105 HP at 3,200 RPM, three-speed manual transmission, solid front and live rear axles with semi-elliptic leaf-spring suspension, four-wheel servo-assisted mechanical drum brakes; wheelbase: 145.5”

Packard dominated America’s fine-car market for much of its history and its renowned Sixth Series models of 1929 epitomized the affluence of the “Roaring Twenties” with an all-eight-cylinder lineup. Accordingly, the former Six was replaced by the Standard Eight on two slightly longer wheelbase lengths as the core models, bettered by the Custom Eight and Deluxe Eight. Riding upon commanding wheelbase lengths, the 640 Custom Eight and 645 Deluxe Eight lines shared a 385 cubic-inch inline eight-cylinder engine producing 105 HP, Packard’s most powerful with the exception of the sporting but short-lived 626 Speedster. A truly dizzying array of body styles were available, the most desirable of them all, by Dietrich.

As one of the most respected body designers of the Classic Era, Ray Dietrich was also one of the most influential. Following stints at Brewster and LeBaron, he formed Dietrich, Inc., where his smart and elegant designs attracted the attention of top Packard management. Soon, Packard became one of Dietrich’s best customers. Lacking an in-house styling department, Packard incorporated Dietrich design cues into its later production cars and, after 1933, all open Packards built carried Dietrich body tags. As such, the names Dietrich and Packard are virtually inseparable to marque enthusiasts today.

Featuring a very attractive and desirable Custom-Catalog body by Dietrich, this 1929 Packard 645 Deluxe Eight Roadster epitomizes the top of the Packard line and rides on a grand 145.5-inch wheelbase chassis, which lends itself beautifully to the signature long rear deck treatment complete with a jaunty rumble seat. It is one of just 2,061 645s sold, a mere fraction of total Packard production for 1929, making it among the rarest of the Sixth Series. An attractive older restoration that has been well-maintained in good order, it maintains good paint quality and panel fit, with the paint finish shiny and attractive with only a few minor blemishes from use and the chrome good overall with some pitting now in evidence upon inspection. Obviously restored to a high standard, the car earned awards at the Meadowbrook Concours d’Elegance in the 1990s. Accessories are numerous and include a Goddess of Speed mascot, dual side-mounted spares with polished covers, and a golf-bag door. Depress Beam headlamps in chrome are supplemented by a pair of Trippe driving lamps, chrome cowl lamps, and dual C.M. Hall spot lamps. In 1929, Packards still could be had with wooden spoke or solid disc wheels; this car wears a set of beautiful chrome wire wheels, optional at $80 in 1929. The wheels are freshly detailed and shod with new whitewall tires. The sporting cockpit is trimmed in very nice dark tan leather which presents very well, along with matching carpeting and an alloy pyramid-pattern floorboard surrounding the shifter and handbrake levers. Being a roadster, the fairly basic canvas soft top remains in good order. Behind the big original steering wheel, the instrument panel is correctly finished in woodgrain paint over steel, with original gauges, including the Jaeger clock, in good condition. Door panels are also very good, capped with attractive wood trim. Packard’s big 384 cubic-inch straight eight is equally well presented, with the block and head finished in correct Packard Green over a natural-finish crankcase. The engine shows regular use on the finished surfaces and remains tidy and appears well-serviced. The firewall and accessories all appear in good condition and the Packard body tag and ID numbers are in place. Overall, this is a very attractive and usable Packard 645 that continues to benefit from a quality restoration and attentive maintenance. Certainly, it will make a very fine choice for shows and touring and with its massive wheelbase and stylish open Dietrich coachwork, this handsome example captures the essence of the “Jazz Age” sporting life.
