The 1957 model year was particularly important to Mercury’s fortunes with the launch of completely restyled cars and, for the first time in its history, bodies exclusive to the marque. Leading the charge for 1957 was the Montclair Turnpike Cruiser. Advertised as “beautifully sculptured… distinctively detailed… with clean line modern styling,” Mercury’s Montclair Turnpike Cruiser was a limited-production, top-of-the-line image leader with cutting-edge styling and every factory-available item standard. Importantly, the Turnpike Cruiser helped position the Mercury lineup further beyond its more basic Ford stablemates. Innovations were many, including twin fresh-air intakes above the windshield, a power front seat with memory dial, a special starter button, sliding door locks, gold-anodized inserts for the concave upper-rear fenders, and more. A three-model series, the Turnpike Cruiser included two- and four-door hardtops and the range-topping convertible. Adding to the excitement, the Montclair Turnpike Cruiser was selected as the pace car for the 1957 Indianapolis 500. Just 16,861 of these innovative, expensive, and stylish automobiles were produced in all for 1957, including 1,265 convertibles. While the Turnpike Cruiser continued for 1958, no convertible was offered that year.

Rare when new and far more so today, this 1957 Mercury Montclair Turnpike Cruiser Convertible is a high-quality example that was formerly part of entertainment legend Dick Clark’s famous and highly popular “’57 Heaven Museum” located in Branson, Missouri. The striking Fiesta Red paint finish remains nice in presentation, complemented by very good brightwork, a good and hardly used white convertible top, and tri-tone tuck-and-roll upholstery. Continuing to benefit handsomely from a carefully preserved older restoration, the Turnpike Cruiser has covered only an approximate 100 miles since the restoration was completed. Ample power is provided by Mercury’s robust 290-horsepower, 368-cid V-8 engine, which breathes through a Holley four-barrel carburetor and a dual exhaust system and resides within a nicely detailed and presented engine bay. Among the Turnpike Cruiser’s many desirable features are a futuristic pushbutton-operated Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission, power brakes, power steering, tinted glass, a fender-mounted spotlight, wide whitewall tires, “spinner” hubcaps, and a pushbutton AM radio. Gracefully styled, powerful, and highly equipped, this 1957 Mercury Montclair Turnpike Cruiser is a proven crowd pleaser and a treat to drive on the open road, as originally intended. A rare offering at auction, it stands as one of the most desirable and collectible 1950s American convertibles available anywhere today.
