260 cid SOHC inline eight-cylinder engine, single carburetor, 88 HP, three-speed manual transmission, solid front and live rear axles with semi-elliptic leaf springs and Watson Stabilators, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes; wheelbase: 134”

Firmly ranked among the greatest innovators of the early 20th Century, self-taught engineers Fred and Augie Duesenberg revolutionized motoring. Racing dominance brought intense demand for a Duesenberg road car, which debuted at the 1920 New York Automobile Show. Dubbed the Model A, it was America’s first production car with inline eight-cylinder power and four-wheel hydraulic brakes, which helped Duesenberg driver Jimmy Murphy out-brake and overpower the opposition to victory at the 1921 French Grand Prix. Despite well-deserved acclaim, Model A sales were hampered by Fred Duesenberg’s insistence on converting the engine to a more sophisticated single overhead-cam architecture. Built with impeccable quality, the Model A was very expensive and only an approximate 650 examples were produced by 1927.

This 1922 Duesenberg Model A is a wonderful example of this ground-breaking automobile from one of the greatest marques in automotive history. It is fitted with stylish Sport Phaeton bodywork by Millspaugh & Irish. Meticulous research was applied to the painstaking restoration, resulting in this early Duesenberg’s adherence to its correct mechanical and cosmetic presentation. The car, which has importantly received ACD Club Level One Certification, is presented in a gorgeous tri-tone color scheme with a Dove Gray main body and Dark Gray fenders, subtly accented with a Deep Red chassis and matching wheels. Body and paint are both to concours quality with outstanding fit and finish evident. Accents are refreshingly understated, with the beautifully polished nickel radiator flanked by correct drum headlamps and topped with a winged Duesenberg-scripted Moto-Meter. Dual side-mounted spares feature upholstered covers and period style mirrors. Dual cowl lamps are affixed to the windshield frame and a painted metal trunk is at the rear. Bumpers and bright trim are finished to a very high standard consistent with the rest of the vehicle.

The black leather-trimmed passenger compartment remains beautiful and fresh, showing little use since restoration. Door panels feature pockets with embossed flaps and the rear of the front seat is equipped with built-in wooden storage cabinets. The dash is correctly finished in black lacquer and a Duesenberg 8-branded Warner De Luxe instrument cluster monitors vital information. The beautiful wood steering wheel has been restored with a furniture-grade finish. The folding top is trimmed in black canvas and remains taut, with full side curtains included. Of course, the highlight of any Duesenberg is the engine, and this exquisite example does not disappoint. The overhead-cam straight eight is beautifully presented against the polished alloy firewall as original. The engine is an impeccably presented engineering marvel and features correct paint, complemented by a polished-alloy cam cover, gorgeous nickel-plated steel wiring loom, and ancillary items are all finished to concours standards, including the Robert Bosch horn. Shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2010, where it also participated in the Pebble Beach Tour, this fine Duesenberg Model A has also received its ACD Club certification, as well as ACD Club National honors and an AACA Junior Award in 2011. Rarely do early Duesenbergs such as this very fine example appear on the open market. As such, it marks a thrilling opportunity to acquire a fabulously restored example that remains very fresh and stands ready to continue its show career or provide a thoroughly rewarding touring experience with an astute new owner to enjoy it.
