In October of 1935, the very first two Type-60 prototypes, known as V1 – a sedan – and V2 – a convertible – were developed for testing. By 1937, a batch of 50 cars had amassed 1.8 million miles of road tests. Designed to be as simple as possible, the cars were air-cooled to avoid having to drain the radiators every night in the cold German winters, and the very first flat-fours developed 25 horsepower. Fast-forward about 55 years, and 21 million Beetles had been produced, a record that still stands today, with over 78,000 documented incremental changes made during its production.

It was in 1948 that Wilhelm Karmann first bought a VW Beetle sedan and converted it into a four-seater Cabriolet. The Beetle Cabriolet began production in 1949 by Karmann in Osnabrück. After successfully presenting it at VW in Wolfsburg, production started in 1949. The Cabriolet was considerably more than simply a Beetle with a folding top. To compensate for the strength lost in removing the roof, the sills were reinforced with welded U-channel rails, a transverse beam was fitted below the front edge of the rear seat cushion, and the side cowl-panels below the instrument panel were robust double-wall construction.

This Beetle was thoroughly restored with all new painted surfaces, convertible top, and new chrome bumpers. The finish is outstanding and freshly applied, with clean sills and interior surfaces as well. The consignor acquired the Beetle from the original owner who bought it in the fall of 1978. All the trim pieces, rubber, and glass is original, and shows the care the car received. The stock steel wheels and tires are new, along with new running boards. This Beetle is in great shape for any road trip, vintage car event, or simply enjoying a drop-top classic with your family. Never failing to draw a crowd, this Beetle Convertible will provide the new owner with a sporty driving experience. Hailing from the last year of German production, it is truly a high-quality example of a truly significant automotive milestone, and one of the most recognizable automobiles in the world.
