176.7 cid L-head inline four-cylinder, 20 HP, two-speed planetary manual transmission, solid front axle and live rear axles with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, contracting-band driveshaft brake plus hand-operated, internal-expanding mechanical rear-wheel brakes; wheelbase: 100"

Introduced in October 1908, the Ford Model T represented an uncanny combination of durability, reliability, and affordability. Remaining in production for nearly 19 full years, some 15 million examples of the beloved “Tin Lizzie,” also lovingly were built and in addition to making Henry Ford a household name, the little car put the world on wheels. The Model T remains an enduring cultural phenomenon today and rightly, it was recognized as the “Car of the Century” in 1999, above 700 other worthy candidates for the award.

January 1911 saw the introduction of a completely restyled Model T, featuring a new body, fenders, wheels and a slightly revised brass radiator. Later that year, a new engine, as well as new front and rear axles appeared. The rear axle was now made of cast iron, with the front axle design now incorporating spindles and separate steering arms. Ford bodies were now made with steel panels over a wooden framework. A mild restyling for 1912 was followed by the “new” 1913 Model Ts, which were introduced during September 1912 and with a host of detail updates, they set the standard for Model T design for the next 12 years. In addition to the changes for 1913, “Made in USA” now appeared on the Model T radiator below the by-then-iconic “Ford” script. This same marking also appeared on many other Model T parts and possibly coincided with Canadian Ford automobile and parts production, since 1913 was also the year when Ford of Canada began engine production.

The Model T was available for 1913 along five body styles, comprising the three-door Touring, two-door Runabout, four-door Town Car, two-Passenger Delivery Car, and two-door, two-Passenger Coupe, plus a bare chassis. Of all, the Touring was the most important and numerous, with 126,715 produced from October 1, 1912 to September 30, 1913. This wonderfully presented 1913 Ford Model T Touring is the earliest example of these motoring icons from The Jimmie Taylor Collection. Most prominently, the glossy black exterior paint finish is handsomely complemented by the brass radiator shell, Ford-scripted gas lamps with brass accents, and the wood-spoked wheels with brass hubcaps are surrounded by proper period-type Firestone tires. A bulb horn adds a further dash of charm, as does a portable coal-type heater inside the button-tufted interior. A nicely fitted folding top provides weather protection as required. A striking exemplar of the Car of the Century, this 1913 Ford Model T Touring certainly marks one of the true highlights of The Jimmie Taylor Collection.
