While Chevrolet was a strong contender in both drag racing and NASCAR during 1960, more power and scope for further development were necessary for continued success. The new 409 engine may have outwardly resembled its predecessor, the 348 “Super Turbo-Fire,” but it was in fact based upon a completely new cylinder-block design. High-strength internals, improved lubrication, a revised cam and valvetrain, plus a new intake and carburetion rounded out the package, initially rated at 360 horsepower.
Announced on December 17, 1960, the new RPO 580 409 engine was introduced alongside the new Super Sport appearance option, marking an important day for Chevy fans everywhere. Production of the SS package and 409 motor followed in January 1961. Early 409s were earmarked for NASCAR teams first and drag racers were forced to wait for the new engines until after the Daytona ‘500’ was run. Chevy drag racers soon gained fame with the 409 and it remains a pop-culture icon thanks to the Beach Boys’ massive 1962 hit “409.” While the Impala SS was the stylish and best-equipped full-size Chevy performer in 1961, racers and hard-core performance addicts often bought the lighter and more basic Bel Air. The 409 returned for 1962 through 1964 and it remains legendary as Chevy’s standard-bearer during the intense early-1960s Super Stock and street wars. Several levels of tune were offered for 1961 through 1964, ranging from 340 horsepower all the way up to the dual-carbureted 425-horsepower racing version.
