Mildly restyled for 1956, the full-size Chevrolet passenger-car line continued and improved the handsome basic styling introduced for 1955. The visual impression of width was heightened with a new full-width grille design and gracefully restyled wheel openings made the new Chevrolets look speedy even while at rest. New safety features included “crash proof” door latches and locks, seatbelts, and padded dashboards. Available in a broad range of body styles and organized along three trim levels, including the entry-level 150, mid-range 210, and top-level Bel Air, the 1956 Chevrolet model line offered literally something for every buyer.
During 1956, Chevrolet confirmed the performance delivered by its powerful new small-block V-8 engine by winning the annual Pike’s Peak Hill Climb. Legendary garage and racing-team owner “Smokey” Yunick used a 1956 Chevrolet to set a 24-hour average-speed record for American-built production cars at 101.58 mph, beating Chrysler’s old record by nearly 12 miles per hour. With its fine styling, many amenities, strong competition record and legendary small-block V-8, the 1956 Chevrolets were a huge success, particularly with nearly 670,000 top-tier Bel Airs alone produced for 1956.
An all-time favorite with collectors, restorers, drag racers, and hot rodders alike, the ’56 Chevrolet in all its many forms remains a true classic-car icon today. Perhaps best of all, with its GM Motorama-inspired “dream car” styling and uncanny ability to accommodate virtually any conceivable powertrain combination, the ’56 Chevy provides a perfect basis for a cool modern custom treatment using today’s technologies and construction quality. This ’56 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible is a great and highly enjoyable example.
With its outstanding body finished in a demanding black paint finish and handsomely accented by restrained bright time accents and sleek C5 Corvette-style side mirrors, this ’56 Chevrolet Bel Air custom convertible makes an outstanding statement on all possible levels. Riding on upgraded front and rear underpinnings and equipped with four-wheel disc brakes, the Chevy features ample power delivery from an electronically fuel-injected GM “Ram Jet” 350 small-block V-8 engine delivering 350 factory-rated horsepower and a flat torque curve peaking at 400 pounds-feet for excellent throttle response in combination with an automatic transmission providing all-around flexibility and cruising ease. In addition to many chromed and polished goodies, plus braided-steel lines and hoses, the healthy Ram Jet 350 breathes through a set of tubular headers. Accessories are driven by a serpentine-belt system and cool running is provided by an aluminum radiator.
The Bel Air’s custom-stitched tan interior was installed by Shawn Cook, the noted custom upholsterer from Murphy, Texas. In addition to the custom tan under-dash panel housing the air-conditioning vents, interior features include a custom central floor console with storage compartment and twin cup holders, a custom convertible-top boot cover, unique door panels combining solid and perforated materials, power window lifts, billet door handles and window cranks, billet vent grilles, and a smart dash insert with milled accent grooves. A handsome polished and wrapped steering wheel, a Custom Classic Instruments gauge cluster, electric clock, and stereo cassette head unit round out the Bel Air’s inviting interior. Under the care of Bobby Monical, the Chevy was repainted and the interior re-trimmed during 2008. A set of polished American Racing Torq-Thrust five-spoke custom wheels finishes off this outstanding custom 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible, which marks another exceptional offering from the Monical Collection.
