Launched for 1958, the new Impala nameplate went on to become a mainstay of Chevrolet’s model line-up. Following the one-year-only body style debuted for 1958, wildly finned styling came for 1959, followed by more restraint for 1960. Now representing the full influence of GM’s newly installed chief designer Bill Mitchell as Harley Earl’s handpicked successor, Chevrolet’s dashing Impala quickly matured into one of America’s definitive and most desirable full-size automobile lines. For 1960, the Impala series was available with six-cylinder and V-8 power and four body styles ranging from the hardtop Sport Sedan to the Two-door “Bubbletop” Sport Coupe, traditional Sedan, and Convertible. The Impala was value-priced, available with many options, and more luxurious than ever before, including a wide range of color choices.

Impala power choices were many, starting with the 135-horsepower, 235 cubic-inch “Hi-Thrift 6.” Small-block V-8s included the “Turbo-Fire" 283 in Economy 173-horsepower and Super 230-horsepower tune. The top “W-head” 348 cubic-inch “Turbo-Thrust” V-8 was also available in two power levels including the 250-horsepower single four-barrel unit and culminating in the “Super Turbo-Thrust Special” 348 with triple carburetors and 280 rated horsepower. Transmission choices included three- and four-speed manual units, available overdrive, and Powerglide and Turboglide automatics.

This Baltimore, Maryland-built 1960 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe features the sleek “Bubbletop” roof treatment favored by Chevy racers on the era’s NASCAR ovals and drag strips. According to its body tag, the Impala left the factory in Ermine White (Code 936A) paint with red and white (Trim Code 873) cloth and vinyl upholstery. Very nicely restored and finished, the Impala is powered by a retrofitted and great-sounding 327 V-8 breathing through a polished open-element air cleaner and dual exhaust. The nicely finished and detailed engine bay includes chrome rocker covers, “Ram’s horn” exhaust manifolds, and a glass bottle containing extra GM “Optikleen” washer fluid. Brakes are of the original single-circuit type, without power assist. The Impala’s passenger compartment includes two-tone hounds tooth upholstery and red carpeting, plus a column shifter, pushbutton AM radio, and chrome tissue dispenser. “Jet Age” design cues include the steering wheel, sculpted arm rests and door panels, bold exterior trim and angular “gullwing” rear treatment, plus rear-fender skirts. Featuring great curb appeal, this rare 1960 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe is ready to enjoy and marks a fitting example of Chevrolet’s immensely successful formula during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
