An iconic design – and one of the most visually striking automobile lines of all from the pre-World War II era, the 1939 Ford models were one of the final expressions of the celebrated design partnership of company president Edsel B. Ford and Eugene T. “Bob” Gregorie. Both men shared a deep appreciation for watercraft and marine design principles, with Ford often navigating the waters of Lake St. Clair, and Gregorie having considerable expertise as a former yacht designer in New York before the Great Depression.

Blessed with smoothly flowing bodylines, intricate grille design, teardrop headlamps, and Art Deco-influenced interiors, the ’39 Fords – regardless of body style – represent a high-water mark of automobile design. Underneath, newly available Lockheed-type hydraulic brakes, revised cylinder heads for the “Flathead” V-8 engine, and welcome detail improvements provided mechanical sophistication to match the obvious beauty of the ’39 Ford line, rendering it a true Classic Era masterpiece.

While some 532,000 Ford passenger cars were built during 1939, precious few survive today in relation to other models of the 1930s. With their great styling and perfect proportions, demand remains strong, spurring the development of modern reproduction bodies with built-in custom tweaks enhancing the already great original design. Likewise, custom chassis designs include up-to-date engineering, components, and construction techniques for sophisticated ride, handling, and braking characteristics. As offered from the Bobby Monical Collection, this 1939 Ford Roadster is a perfect case in point. Built to exceptionally high standards with virtually no possible expense spared, it is simply stunning, with its smooth red high-gloss paint finish complemented by custom hand-painted pin striping and a top-quality tan Haartz removable cloth top supported by a fully powder coated steel framework underneath.

Outstanding power is delivered by a GM crate LS1 5.7-liter, all-aluminum V-8 Corvette Z06 engine mated to a GM 4L60E four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. Spent combustion gases are removed by a stainless steel dual exhaust system including Flowmaster mufflers for a great sound. Cooling is delivered by an aluminum radiator and fuel delivery is via a stainless steel fuel tank. Directional control is provided by precise power rack-and-pinion steering gear, four-wheel power disc brakes handle stopping, and underpinnings include Air Ride Technologies suspension front and rear.

Handsomely trimmed in Fawn leather upholstery, the luxurious full custom interior is accented with tanned Ostrich leather inserts on the dash, door panels, headliner, seat, and trunk compartment. The driver is greeted by Dakota digital instruments and polished billet aluminum goodies including a Colorado Custom tilt steering column with matching custom steering wheel, plus control knobs, levers, linkage, pedals, air conditioning vents, and dash surround. Creature comforts include remote power door locks, keyless starting, power trunk lift, power windows, Superfrost air-conditioning, and a Sony Xplod stereo CD unit and speaker system. Other highlights include billet aluminum taillight housings, LED turn signals, and mirrors. A complete build book accompanies this turn-key and totally modern ’39 Ford street rod, which continues to benefit from limited mileage and the care and proper storage it has enjoyed within Mr. Monical’s noted collection. Riding on 17- and 20-inch billet aluminum Colorado wheels, it looks, drives, and handles very well. It represents very usable street rod technology and is a show stopper everywhere it goes.
