2.0-litre DOHC Lotus inline four-cylinder engine, 160 HP, five-speed gearbox, fully independent suspension, four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes; wheelbase: 88.6"

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and his ItalDesign firm as a styling exercise first displayed at Turin in 1972, the Esprit was developed by British F1 racing powerhouse Lotus and unveiled in near-production form during 1974 with first deliveries made in 1976. While its stunning shape stole headlines, the Esprit was in fact a technological masterpiece. Initially powered by the Lotus-designed Type 907 16-valve, DOHC four-cylinder engine, the Esprit also benefited from Lotus’ famous “added lightness” approach in keeping with its championship-winning Formula 1 design principles. A steel backbone chassis, rack-and-pinion steering, and four-wheel disc brakes delivered razor-sharp dynamics. With its exotic styling and limited-production cachet, the Esprit was the perfect mount for Roger Moore as Her Majesty’s Secret Agent 007 in 1977’s “The Spy Who Loved Me,” followed by “For Your Eyes Only” in 1981. Throughout its long production run, the Esprit was relentlessly developed and improved along several distinct series. Production continued until February 20, 2004 with just 10,675 examples built in all.

This rare numbers-matching 1979 Lotus Esprit S2 is 1 of only 1,061 examples produced from 1978 to 1981. It was sold new to Elaine Divak on May 22, 1981 through La Montesa Motors of Mahwah, New Jersey, later making its way to Texas and Los Angeles. Featuring the well-balanced 160 horsepower, all-alloy 2.0-litre, Lotus twin-cam, four-cylinder, mid-mounted engine, this Esprit is presented in iconic white livery, as made famous in the “The Spy Who Loved Me” and retains the original upholstery. Other original items retained by this Esprit S2 are the preserved original spare wheel and tire and correct 7- and 7.5x14-inch Speedline wheels, plus a matching additional Speedline wheel included with the car. Other highly desirable features setting this Esprit apart from lesser examples are the original Triplex glass and original trim items. A period ‘Supremo’ steering wheel is presently fitted, with the original Lotus embossed wheel also included with the sale of the car. In addition to original sale particulars, this wonderful 1979 Lotus Esprit S2 is also accompanied at auction with the original, VIN-matched Owner’s Handbook in its factory-issued document folio. Featuring legendary race-derived engineering and highly rare, it simply must be experienced!
