Certainly, the model name of a car can mean everything in terms of success as grand names like Riviera or Thunderbird can conjure up images of grandeur, but what could we possibly say about the Thing? Built by Volkswagen from 1968-1983 it actually carried several names and was sold as the Kurierwagen in West Germany, the Trekker in the United Kingdom, the Safari in Mexico and South America, and Pescaccia in Italy. In the United States, though, it was marketed simply as the Thing. The Thing shared mechanical components with several of the company’s other products including the Type 1 Beetle, the Microbus, and even the Karmann Ghia. In 1974, Volkswagen decided to have little fun with the Thing while also filling a small market niche that made the Fiat Jolly a marvel. Dubbed, the Acapulco Edition, it was built from May through July of 1974 and production amounted to just around 400 of these island treasures. All were built in a blue and white configuration and there were several other attributes that made it special. All Acapulcos featured black running boards and unique mounting plates inside the fenders. A tastefully designed paint scheme matched a two-tone stripped vinyl seat motif that complemented a surrey top that was mounted to the windshield pillar. All of this made for a Thing that was bold, bright, beautiful, and more than ready for island duty.

Featured here is an excellent example of this most iconic car that has received a full pan-off restoration that has returned it to “like-new” condition. It’s brilliant exterior is a DuPont base coat/clear coat that gives it a perfect shine. All upholstery is new and nicely complements its new paint. The signature surrey top brings the whole package together, and a freshly rebuilt motor provides excellence and reliability for which Volkswagen is known. All fuel lines and brakes have been replaced and the entire pan was finished in a durable Rhino lining for durability.

Volkswagen built the Thing for a very special purpose and the Acapulco Edition took its unique design to an even higher level. With its bright colors, easy drivability, cute surrey top, and outstanding condition, this is a car that’s sure to gather stares from everyone it passes. For coastal touring or a day at the beach, this rare Volkswagen is the perfect car for a sunny day.
