Mack may build trucks and Cadillac may build luxury cars, but the Porsche name has been synonymous with speed and performance since its very inception. Starting with the famous 356, Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche’s cars were virtually unbeatable on the racetrack. The incredible 356 firmly placed the company in the winner’s circle over many years. With its performance image solidified beyond a doubt, Porsche began to move into a more luxurious car that offered the experience of Grand Touring. For 1982, Porsche introduced the highly refined 944. This front-engine car with rear-wheel drive was based on the 924 platform and was available as a coupe or cabriolet, but the big difference was up front where its powerful engine was available with a turbo charger that made it a stellar performance both on and off the track.

The 944 offered here is most likely the finest original example extant. Upon purchase, the new owner absolutely adored his 944 and each and every mile was for a specific purpose. He would often sit in the car while still in the garage and enjoy his Porsche while simply listening to the radio. This resulted in him purchasing several new batteries for the car over the years. These new batteries, and a set of new wiper blades, are pretty much the sum of the non-original components of this Turbo which has been driven a mere 1,603 miles. Care and fastidious attention are such that when the wipers were recently replaced, they were wrapped, marked, and placed in the car and remain, as do the original 944 Turbo ground mat and gloves “in case of flat tire” – also thoughtfully wrapped and marked. The recent passing of the original owner has now made the car available for its next careful custodian.

Finished in Porsche’s Signal Red, the fit and finish on this car rises to a level of excellence that is seldom seen on a car of this age. All doors open and close as they should, all emblems and trim components are intact, and all glass is clean and clear. The interior presents as new in black leather with the comfort and sophistication that marked the 944’s place in history. Contour fitting seats are prefect for extended touring and easy to read gauges coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox offer a great driver experience. Under the hood, the engine compartment presents as factory new with correct wiring, hose clamps, and belts. The large air intake box up front clearly spells out Turbo and lets the world know that this is a Porsche that’s all-business.

So successful was the 944 that by the time production ended, over 163,000 had been built making it Porsche’s most successful car up to that time. This example, with its pristine condition and astounding level of preservation, stands alone in its class and as a testament to its long-term loving care. With is like-new condition and amazing 1,600 miles from new, it has become a modern classic that, simply put, is better than the rest.
