The elegant Paul Bracq-designed 250 SE debuted at the 1965 Frankfurt Auto Show as a successor to the “Fintail” W112/W113 series cars known as the 220. Fins were on the way out, and the new 250 SE was a welcome refresh to the aging 220. Sleeker, with a larger cabin, the new 250 S and SE were highly successful models for Mercedes in the U.S., with nearly half of production shipped directly here.

This lovely example was delivered in 1965 to Rome, complete with a high-compression Euro-spec engine and a floor-shifted four-speed transmission. After a few years touring the Alps, the owner moved to California and imported the car, driving it regularly in the California sunshine until 2014, when the consignor sought out the car and was subsequently able to acquire it. He drove it for a few months, but soon decided to do a complete restoration, spearheaded by Titan Car Restoration, who specialize in pre-1971 Mercedes. They completed a rotisserie nut-and-bolt restoration in 2017, and as you can see upon close inspection, the results are impressive. The fresh Tobacco Brown paint is flawless, with crisp chrome and trim throughout. A correct new Bamboo leather interior with Chocolate Brown carpets and mats was expertly installed, and the plush bucket seats match the leather door panels perfectly. The beautiful woodgrain dash is filled with bright chrome and clean instruments along with a Becker Brescia TR radio. The driver will certainly enjoy the convenience of power steering, power brakes, and power locks, but the whole family can enjoy the luxurious seating and comfortable ride of this incredible luxury car.

Mercedes pumped up the performance for the 250 SE by boring and stroking the inline six in 1965 to 2.5 litres, and with 9.3:1 compression and Bosch fuel injection, it pushes 150 HP and gives the car a 120-mph top speed. It’s a proven bulletproof engine with seven main-bearing crank, a double roller timing chain, and plenty of torque for modern highway capability. The engine bay is very clean and correct, and this 250 SE is fully ready for any long-distance cruise, touring event, or participation in any Mercedes-Benz Club of America concours event. In fact, this car was invited to participate in the Mille Miglia “Circle of Excellence” in 2017, with personal health issues unfortunately preventing acceptance. Your purchase includes the original manuals, tool kit, and jack that came with the car over 50 years ago, as well as the secure knowledge that your car has a known history throughout and was restored by marque experts.

This impressive 250 SE runs like a Swiss watch, and will certainly afford the new owner with years of spirited driving. It is a clean, solid and impressively maintained automobile with an excellent, straight body and consistent flush panel fit throughout. These mid-‘60s Mercedes-Benz models are the basis of much of the marque's earned reputation for quality, and they have also become a reliable investment as more and more collectors begin to realize their inherent value. Offered by a knowledgeable and selective collector, and very attractively presented with believed original 38,000 miles, this 1965 250 SE is a high-quality example of a true legend that is ready to own and enjoy with confidence. As Car and Driver noted, “every driver who has more than a purely utilitarian interest in automobiles should drive a Mercedes-Benz 250 SE at least once in their life.” We could not agree more.
